As there are no live concerts right now, due to the Coronavirus epidemic, we are reviewing incredible live sessions from our favorite artists.

SYML (Brian Fennel) is one of those artists that creates an encapsulating atmosphere every time he performs. March 25, 2020, he released a live session recorded at Nest Studios in LA. This session includes his 2019 single "Symmetry," as well as two songs from his debut self-titled album, "Bed" and "Everything All at Once."

The video pans in on as Brian sets a looping electric guitar pedal to create an ambient undertone to the whole session. He silently retreats from the guitar and sits down at his baby grand to begin the haunting melody of "Symmetry." Finally, we get to hear the soft somber lyrics from SYML's overly exposed vocals. As the song progresses, very subtle notes are heard from guitar and xylophone to bring the listener into the darkened setting created by the piece. SYML finishes the song with his deep and uplifting lyrics "Rest now child, the day is done. The dark comes for everything. Inside the heart of everyone, there lives infinity." As the camera pans away from his piano, Brian moves back to his guitar to share two love songs.

Switching to the major key, SYML begins his next track, "Bed." The song really picks up after the keys come in and we start to hear Brian's incredible falsetto. SYML's live falsetto is a true feat to behold, as it sounds the same live and recorded. We saw him in concert last month and we were blown away by his pure natural tone, even in front of thousands of fans. He closes off the song with a full-voiced falsetto of the recurring chorus.

After a quick harmonic modulation from the lead guitarist, Brian once again shares his exposed vocals to begin "Everything All At Once." The keys are highlighted in this song to start a leading bass line before simplifying to wistful, nostalgic chords. The bass line recurs through the song, as SYML switches back and forth from falsetto to belting his loving melody. You can see the passion in Brian's eyes as he sings "Hold on to me" over and over again.

As the music and screen fades out to black, the listener suddenly realizes that they are not in the room with Brian and his band. SYML has a way of using lyrics and melodies to make people sympathize and feel his emotions. His songs have extremely deep and meaningful lyrics with subtle melodies harmonizing throughout, so its extremely easy for a listener to feel the music as he sings. In an interview with Nolala.com, Brian states his debut album is about "the journey we're all on to find an identity and to find out why the f*!k we're here."
